Calling home

The last time I called home, mum was still around to pick up.

The number is so familiar to me. I know it by heart, I use parts of the digits for some of my passwords. It was a number I used to dial, once, twice, sometimes even three times, a day.

And then nothing. There was no more need to call. And once, sometime ago, when out of force of habit and without thinking, I dialed that number. But there was no one to pick up.

I needed to call tonight, because my sister in law is supposed to be there today, and she wanted me to contact her to discuss what to do with mum's possessions. But I guess she was out, because no one picked up the phone...

Instead, I called one of mum's dearest friends, whose husband (a medium and Toaist priest...) was in charge of organising her funeral. As bizarre as it may sound, I asked how mum is doing...

She knows I've sunk into terrible, terrible depression. She knows somehow that I've been crying a lot (as I am crying now...) from pain and loss. She knows that I am feeling so lost and directionless, and so very lonely. Mum knows.

One can dismiss this all as superstitious rubbish, you can say I am insane to believe the exploits of charlatans,  but think of it this way: imagine mum were still alive today. Who knows me better than any one else in the whole wide world? Who can feel my feelings and share my thoughts better than any one? She may not be here on  this plane of existence, but, somewhere where I cannot see her, somewhere where I cannot hear her, that's where she is now... Perhaps my dreams and the images in my mind are portals to that alternative plane, perhaps the realm of my dreams and imagination is where we can see one another and "communicate", albeit in the language of silence and facial expressions...

I imagine she is looking at me, watching over me... looking at me as I looked at her all those days and nights by her bedside, watching over her helplessly. Perhaps she is feeling helpless and hurting now as much as I did when she was in pain and suffering from her illness...

"When you need to talk to someone, please call. We are here..." My mum's friend said she misses mum too. "And she was just a dear friend... I cannot imagine how it is for you, she was your ma..." In her voice, I could hear her begin to tear. "She was such a kind person, your mama..."

She was my mother. My dear, dear and brave mother. I had to cover my mouth to muffle the groan of pain and agony from escaping. I had to close my eyes to contain the tears. Quickly I ended the conversation. It had to be quick, because I could not utter another word.

For the next ten minutes, I cried and cried, and cried some more.

Three more nights

28082012.0122

Lying down to sleep, the first of three last nights here in mum's home. It's quiet outside, but a few hundred kilometers to the south, Tembin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Tembin_(2012)
Is unleashing chaos and destruction for the second time as it returns to pummel the island hard. I am hugging a large teddy, one my Ex gave me some time ago. The teddy has been with mum for over two years, and accompanied her all the way till the end of her life. Soon, the soft and lovable bear in my embrace, who kept me company and kept the loneliness at bay for so many nights and comforted me to sleep, will make his way out of my life again, and accompany my nephew back to Europe.

It is unusually quiet, and my mind is a haze. A haze. Another crippling spell of fatigue has overcome me, and I feel such heavy dizziness and a strange mixture of emotions I cannot express, I cannot capture...

Can hurt be so painful that you become numb? Can pain be so powerful that you do not feel anything at all? I am out of words, am too tired and too exhausted to properly reflect on all that has happened here over the past few weeks, let alone to write something worth of being written and read or remotely touching to mark the end of a long, long stay...

I will fall asleep, wake up, and a new day will have already begun. Far too quickly, far too quickly.

Terrible emptiness

I feels so empty inside it hurts...
This place feels so foreign it hurts...

Longing

There are moments when the depth and degree of emptiness and loneliness is overwhelming. The moments are especially felt when it is quiet at night, and when everyone has gone to sleep. Nothing, not even stuffed animals or memories of the past can fill that emptiness.

There are moments when you realise again just what you lost, and can never have back. And the realisation is so painful, so very very painful. Even more painful because nobody, nobody, can fully know or understand how painful it all is.

媽媽,我想妳...

Empty nest

Sitting in the dining area, where mum's altar was for the last two weeks. It's so quite here. No more chanting machine, no more incense in the air. No more mum.

There's an empty feeling in the room, in my heart. Perhaps I never realised how strong these feelings are, but they are there. And they are surfacing more and more with every tear I shed. Though friends are around me, I still feel so empty inside. I know not how to turn to them. And I have this image of me descending into deepest, darkest void I've ever known in my life.

That is scary. And I am perhaps for the first time since mum passed away, very afraid.

Emptiness

I was told before even emptiness is a feeling. It is just the feeling of emptiness. A lack of feeling is also a feeling. It just is.

And I feel it strangely now, coming to the first week after mum passed away. Brother just asked me if I miss mum or think of her. To be honest, not much. I see her everyday in the living room, I prepare food for her (but admittedly, I've not been very diligent, but mostly bought take away, instead of cooking her favourite dishes for her as I should do...). I smile at her, smile when I see pictures of her. Even today, sorting throughout old photo albums and looking for pictures to use at the funeral, I could only smile and laugh at the clothes and hair-dos back then, smile and laugh at the days when I was young, when mum and dad were still mum and dad...

Brother says he thinks of mum when he's alone by himself. When he's not busy taking care of the baby or running around dealing with affairs, he thinks of mum... He wonders where mum is now... Whether mum met up with dad... How mum is doing... He thinks of her. He says he thinks of mum's body lying there in the icebox at the funeral home...

But I do not.

And I feel "guilty" for not feeling, for feeling as if her passing was a non-event. Why that is, I do not know, for she was so dear and so close to me. She was (almost) my everything and what I woke up to every morning for the past few months. When she hurt, I felt frustrated and hoped I could do something, anything to take away her pain... When she was moody, I was sad and agitated, and wondered what I did to make sad and wondered what I could do to cheer her up... When he passed away, I wished her happiness and peace, and other than that did not really feel any sense of loss... But lose someone so dear, so intimate, I certainly did. But I have yet to fully feel the effects of it...

It explains why I've not managed to sit down and write anything about that eventful day. It's been almost a week, and yet I feel this block. I so want to get the words and emotions out, but I can't, I don't know where or how to start. Start from the beginning? Start from the days before when she slowly stopped eating and began to sleep more and more with the morphine drips? Start from when she started to slowdown her rate of breathing...? How do I capture those final moments in words? All I can think of is one word: beautiful. But the details seem to be so vague, seem to be fading with each passing day...

There is this emptiness within. Not that I do not love mum or care about her. Because I know I do, and did, more than anyone else I've come across in my life. And I know she loved/loves me and cared/cares about me more than anyone else ever did (and perhaps ever will...?). Still, there is this emptiness within.

But emptiness is a feeling too.
