Seeing dad

I saw dad in the room next to mine. In the dream, it felt like ages since I last spoke to him or did anything with him. He was there, metres away from me and I could hear him.

I called out to dad. I called out again...

I saw his face, his smile, I saw him wear that bright coloured blue and yellow jacket he loved to wear so much, I saw him wear this navy blue v-neck vest, shirt and tie. I saw him and his hair, the way it has always been combed to the side.

I felt this pain in my chest and I could hardly breathe. I chocked and shook awake from my dream. I found myself calling out to dad.

"Dad... Dad! Dad!"

It's been six years since I last saw him. Six years since he died.
Why did he appear in my dream now?

Why did I wake up crying...?

Irregular heartbeat...
Emergency referral to  see cardiologist

X Ray and scans

After over six hours of waiting, I was finally led to a room where they drew some blood samples. Six hours after entering emergency, they still could not and did not tell me what was wrong with me.
After another bout of waiting, i was told to follow some signs that led to the X Ray and scan area. I waited a bit more and finally the door slid open, and a lady beckoned me in.

I paused a bit when I stepped into the room. It looked so familiar. The equipment. The layout. The feel. The sight. The smell (even though there was none, except a slight sterile scent...).
The technician told me to stand and wait for further instructions. I stood and eyed the room. I felt this surge of emotions and tears overwhelm me.

I saw mum lying there on the bed... I saw tubes connected to her nose and to her thin, frail arms.... I saw her sunken cheeks, her bulging eyes, her weak smile. I saw mum lie there and try to brave a smile. I saw myself hold her hand and nod to her in a way to tell her that everything will be ok.
I cried. The tears just burst out.

I turned around so the techncian , who was busy adjusting the equipment behind a big glass window, could not see me.

How familiar this all felt. How painfully familiar! How many times did mum go on her own to be probed and scanned? How many times did dad do it without me knowing? And here I am, all alone, Standing before this massive machine waiting to scan me, terrified and pain stricken, overwhelmed by memories and images. I was reminded of what happened several hours earlier when the check in nurse asked me who my emergency contact was. The first name and face that came to my mind was that of my ex. I hesitated, I thought more as the nurse looked at me perhaps wondering why it took me so long to answer a simple question. Finally, I gave another name. This is partly why I dread hospitals. They will ask you questions you do not wish to answer, you do not feel comfortable answering. They will confront you with the facts and realities that you cannot change... The fact that you are ill, the fact that you are in need of assistance, and the fact that you really are alone in the world and have no one you can turn to (except the kindness of strangers and compassion and professionalism doctors and nurses)  if you fall ill or die.

There was no one else in the xray room but me. But my mind filled the room with moments that have long passed, filled it with people who too have long passed.

the xray machine whirred and on a dsipay I  saw my name and date of birth. I saw the machine inch closer and then the technician bellowed and told me to stand in a certain position and not to move.
I breathed deep, even though it was exactly by doing that that hurt me the most, and held my breathe. The machine beeped and moved behind me. I closed my eyes and felt the tears drying.

"Deep breathe now.... Deep breathe....". I told myself. There is nothing and nobody else in the room but me. Deep breathe now. Deep breathe.

Be brave now. Be brave.

Return to hospital

Return to hospital

My colleague, the same one who told me to stay home and rest last week, urged me to go, but I have been very resistant. I just dread, dread hospitals.

But there comes a time when you must face what you dread most. I just didn't think that twice in two months, I'd have to return somewhere where I've had nightmares about, and occassionally still have dreams about even till this day, almost two years after mum died.

My colleague got out a sheet of paper with information about the walk in clinique associated with the Montreal Jewish Hospital. I'm no stranger to the hospital... Back in the day when I was volunteering i would i'd once a week. My bereavement group sessions took place there. I'd just not think I'd one day have to go there myself...

At my colleague's urging I decided to bit the pain and pride and call the hospital. I was told I could go straight away. I hung up the phone and inadvertently felt tears in my eyes. I was crying.

Why? Is it fear? Is it dread? Is it fear that something terrible will be discovered (and if so, isn't it better early then never)? Is it fear that I'd have to spend time at the hospital and not habe anyone come see me or take care of me if something is seriously wrong?

It's not fear of dying that made me cry. It's the fear of facing demons and seeing the sick. It's fear of seeing and feeling overwhelmed by compassion, feeling overwhelmed by the possible question of "Could I have done more?" For mum? For dad? For my friends Carmen and Tehwei?

The chest pain is really unbearable. I feel it when I move, I feel it when I just try to get up from lying down... I feel it just when I breathe a little bit harder, or talk a little bit louder. I felt it badly as I walked up the hill trying to get to the office. I was so out of breath, panting so heavily and aching badly...

I have to go in now. I have to no matter what.

Day six of the illness

6 Feb 2014

060214.2144

Day six of my illness. Woke up to more coughing, body aches and my head that continues to spin and an inability to stand steadily. Two days ago (was it two? Days and time seem to have so little meaning and are so blurred...), I called my older cousin to come get me and bring me to the emergency room. Actually my auntie called on my behalf. I could barely muster the energy to get up on my feet, let alone speak. Originally, my auntie wanted to take me to the hospital by motorcycle, but I I cannot.... I cannot hold on to the handle and was afraid I'd lose my balance and fall off. I was that weak...

The "cold" did not subside, not with the cocktail of over-the-counter pills that a pharmacist had prescribed me. To think of it, I had no clue what the pills were. He just asked me for my symptoms, and there and then put something together and asked me to pay nt$150 (approx $5). It was dodgy, but I thought little of it except to get better. But I did not get better.

For two days I languished. Sores, heavy coughing and difficulty breathing. The discomfort was unbearable, and every morning I'd wake up with much phlegm that was thick, toxic and dark. Then, the morning I decided I needed to check myself into the hospita, I really felt I was dying. I was drifting in and out of consciousness. I had trouble thinking straight. I tried to do simple sums in my head, but could not. I tried to answer simple questions, like what is my name and where I am, but could not. My body was sweating profusely, my clothes and the bedsheets were soaked with my sweat. I needed medical intervention, as much as I resisted and despised going to a hospital (especially after losing both my parents in one....)

I staggered downstairs and lay on the sofa. My friends were chatting away and preparing to leave. I was in a foul mood and could barely speak. I felt terrible unable to join them for the rest of their trip, for they were leaving the next day. But I knew if I were to accompany them and head to the north, no body would be able to take care of me if I got worse. I needed to stay in the south, in Chiayi where at least I have a network of relatives who can care for me and help me if something terrible happened.

I lay there and felt my head and body burning as I waited for my older cousin to come by with the car. My auntie gave me some broth with vegetables and clams to restore some energy, and I asked her to warm up some tomato juice. Luckily I did not throw up, because the night before I did, and all I had for dinner came pouring out. When around midnight I felt really hungry  and tried to have a slice of cake, I took one bite and barely had the time to swallow when i felt the nauseating feeling of my stomach rising up to my throat. I had to spit the piece of cake I bit on and stop eating. I had not eaten since then.

I asked my auntie for some pen and paper. I scribbled a note to my friends. I felt apologetic that I could not be with them, and thanked them for coming all this way to visit me and be with me. At the end, I wrote down two things: "everything" and an arrow pointing to the name my nephew, after that "20yrs, 30yrs, 40yrs"; and the name of my cat and an arrow pointing to the name of my ex, and the word "love" after his name.

It may seem so silly and so ridiculous. But at moments, I really felt I was not going to make it. Those two simple lines lay out my will and final wishes. Everything i have to my nephew, whom I love and cherish, and who is perhaps the closest I will ever have to a future family (at this point...), to be given in three installments, so that there's no risk of evrything being wasted away when he gets too much all at once. And the cat, my loyal feline companion and love, to the greatest love I've ever known, regardless of what we are now to one another, regardless of the fact he has already moved on and made clear we are just friends now, and because of the fact (as I have been told by so many...) I am still so naive and so loyal and unable to move on... On the brink of death (or at least what you imagine or feel it to be...), all is forgotten, all can be forgiven.

We drove to the Chiayi Christian Hospital, ironically right opposite the Nice (that is the name....) Hotel where mum and I stayed one of the last times we were both down here. I have memories of me waiting for her at the train station for her to arrive, and how happy I was to see her step off the train and to know she arrived safely... I have memories of us having a lovely breskfast together in the lobby, a healthy buffet of congee and an assortment of traditional dishes and drinks and plentiful fruits... It felt like ages ago, but I still can remember the joy I felt when i could see mum eat healthily without vomiting and the joy I felt to see her wake up in the morning after a good night of comfortable and relaxing sleep...

It took less than ten minutes for me to register and be seen by someone at the emergency room. The efficiency of the medical system here never ceases to amaze me. A nurse first asked me of my symptoms and details of my travels and contacts with people, and then I was seen by a doctor who determined it most likely is (as I suspected and so dreaded...) the H1N1 influenza. A bed was assigned to me and I was told to keep my mask on (which I've been doing more or less since I started to cough four days earlier). They planned to give me some IV drips to replenish lost nutrients and fluids, and I need to undergo a rapid screening to see whether I indeed have the potentially deadly virus.

The nurse stuck a need into my left arm. I cringed, and was reminded of the many times I saw mum (and to a lesser extent, dad) having needles stuck in their arms. She prepared the needle for the drip and connected me to a flask containing clear liquid that hung on a hanger. The tube dyed red as my blood flowed back through it due to the sudden pressure changes. A good backflow is a a sign that the connection was done well, this much I knew from the dozens of times I've seen it done on mum and dozens of times I've had to monitor whether the IV drip is working properly.

I felt my arm go numb then prick with pins and needles. I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes, and let the noise and hustle of the ER ward wash over me. Doctors and nurses shouting commands and orders, patients moaning, relatives and friends chattering and some asking questions in attempts to understand the full extent of the pain and suffering of their loved one. The hospital is a place filled with human suffering, blighted by the (for the most part...) human experience of illness and struggle against death. But  it is also a place where human compassion and love can bloom and manifest. I watched the "white angels" scurry around the ward trying to keep abrest of each patient's vitals while constantly maintaining an air of cool and patience. I saw the dark, thin and twisted bodies of patients lie on several beds, all hoping for a cure or at least some kind relieve from the mental and physical pains this constantly aging and vulnerable sack of skin and bone is bringing them. At the hospital, regardless of wealth or origin, regardless of background or upbringing, we are all brought together by illness and death, by hope of betterment and prolonging our lives.

Is it not in brushes with illness and death that we experience higher states of understanding? It is bizarre, for I could barely think straight from the fever, profuse sweating and another cocktail of medication the nurse asked me to ingest. But in that haze and fuzziness of my mind, there seemed to be this clarity of thought, a clarity best summed by the words:

"It is only so much.

It is only so much.

Life is only so much..."

I had similar realisations as I watched my parents slowly lose their signs of life in my arms. In the end, nothing, not the anger you harbour, not the fears you dread, not the unknowns you fear matter. In the end, a clear conscience and the knowledge that you have done your best and lived your live to the fullest with no regrets matter.

I closed my eyes, felt the sweat soak my clothes, roll down my cheeks and dampen my hair. A dull, dull pain seemed to vibrate through my body and affect every body and muscle. I watched my breath, as short and laboured as it was, and tried to br aware of each moment. What else can you do when you are under tremendous physical and mental duress and pain but try to calm the mind and be one with the moment and remind yourself nothing will last foreever, even this pain and this moment?

The nurse came back with a thin white tube that had some sort of brush on the end. "I'm going to do a nasal examination to determine what type of influenza virus you have. It's going to hurt a bit but do not sneeze under any circumstance!"

She stuck it into one nostril first, and I felt this sharp discomfort, this prickling sensation in my nostril as she slid the tube in deeper and twisted it around inside. She then removed it and repeated the proceedure in the other nostril. All the while I closed my eyes and let her probe, swallowing hard and holding in the tears until she removed the tube. There was yellowish mucus on the brushy end of the long thin plastic tube. She said it would take around 40 minutes to an hour for the results to come out.

My cousin sat next to me.  Even in great physical discomfort, I felt bad taking up her time, as she has two young children at home and it's right in the middle of her vacation. But she reassured me family don't think or say such things as "being a burden" or "causing trouble". She told me to just rest.

But rest I could not. I closed my eyes, but could feel the transparent tube feeding into my vein and body. I drifted in and out of consciousness, and my vision became blurred. I remember the nurse coming to check on me a few times, and seeing my cousin there next to me every time I opened my eyes. I remember hearing a middle aged man shout loudly at someone, presumably his wife, lying in the bed in front of me who was unsconscious and was unable to respond. I remember my cough causing tremendous pain that spread around my body.... I remember staring up at the ceiling and the white fluroscent lighting. I remember the last few words I wrote, and wondered if they were enough to express what I wanted if I were to no wake up again... I thought about my loved ones, about those dearest to my heart, and how I had kept news of the severity of my illness and the fact that I've been taken to Emergency quiet. Even to my own brother, who by then had boarded a plane and left on holiday, I did not tell, for I did not want him to cancel a trip that he and his wife have been looking forward to for a long time. And I told my cousin not to tell her mum (my aunt, dad's older sister), so as not to worry her. She's already undergoing some kind of medical treatment, and is herself very weak, so I didn't wish to alarm her.  Besides. if I were to go, I want to go quietly...

I don't know how much time passed when I suddenly heard my name. My cousin told me the news. I have indeed contracted the a potentially deadly influenza virus, a strain of the H1N1 mutation that is simply called "Influenza A". Dozens have died from it already this flu season, and a strain of it killed thousands back in 2009. Yet another strain of it killed over two hundred million back in the early twentieth century. Commonly known as "swine flu" or " avian flu", H1N1, or so variation of it, is cobstsnlty evolving and adapting and spreading in the human population, even though it's origins may have come from swine and birds. Left untreated, the patient's immune system will continually weaken from the constant fever, causing delirium, extreme exhaustion, muscle pains and sores as well as severe coughing. Other symptoms may be diarrhea, vomiting and stomach upset (and strangely, possible constipation....). Children and the elderly are especially susceptible. But it appears people like me are not immune...

The nurse came by again and handed me several pills. One was a capsule, yellow and grey in colour, and there were three other round pills, one of which was bright pink, one of which white and one of which was orange. She gave me some water and told me to take the pills and assured me I will be alright and can be discharged the very same day, pending my fever subsiding. The pills and IV drips, and the fact that I was constantly breaking out in sweat, are supposed to help cool my body down.

More time passed in the din and bustle of the emergency ward. The nurse appeared again and handed me a pamphlet, and said I could go home. She told me to stay home and avoid public places, and that I need to keep a constant watch on my body temperature. Any more signs of fever and I need to return to the hospital for further treatment.

I thanked her and was relieved. I had I needed to be quarantined or something. Indeed, on board all flights into Taiwan, the government makes the airline play this health awareness video which warns all inbound travelers to report to the authorities should they fall ill within a week of arriving in Taiwan and have symptoms of fever, coughing and body aches. I have all the symptoms, and should have perhaps gone for a check up much much sooner instead of languishing in bed for almost three days... Better late than never, but the longer I didn't seek proper treatment, the more damage the virus was wreaking on my body.

Still weak and sweating profusely, even though the fever was gone, or at least under control.

Little did I know, the following few days would be a physically tormenting experience. Most of the time, I lay in bed, getting up only to eat and to drink and to use the washroom, drifting in and out of sleep, coughing profusely especially at night and feeling the discomfort of large quantities of phlegm stuck in my lungs and throat. Memories of mum and dad drifted in and out of my mind, and there would be moments when I would cry from the physical discomfort and the regrets of having fallen so ill and uncertain what would happen to me. In several dreams I had during this period I would see my parents.  A part of me wanted to Join them, to leave this world, because frankly I don't see much meaning or purpose with my life. All the things and people  I care about seem to have settled down and are fine without me. My family, my nephew, the ex... No more worries about their happiness or well-being, no more "missions" to fulfill, like unused to have, In which I would try yo bring a smile or add some colours into the life of someone I care about deeply.  Besides, a rough  will has been drafted, along with a letter of appreciation for all I am grateful for in life. What else is there left to say...?

The illness just compounded the pain and made me realise if I were to leave, I would leave now quietly and without much attachment or noise, without much fuss or fury. It's how I would want to go. I could go so quietly, and nobody would really miss me, nobody would really ache or hurt. And that is a good thing. Nothing is more painful than being too attached and the hurt of someone who is left behind. Nothing.

Go quietly, as quietly as I came into this world, without regrets or pain or concerns. Solitude and being alone too long can have such a terrible effect on a person's soul and mind. Solitude and being on the brink of life and death (or so it feels like...).

4 March

Over a week since my return to Montreal. No great big fanfare for my birthday (in fact, my brother only realised it was my birthday when I spoke to him this past weekend), no special welcome or anything in particular. It's back to life as usual, as if I've not been away at all.

It does feel like I've not been away. Besides the experience of being so ill, the three weeks went by so quickly and I don't remember doing much worth mentioning. The only thing I "took" from my trip is the ordeal of the illness. Memories of the  fever and burrning sensations and pain all over still makes my skin crawl. Even to this day, I still feel pain in my chest and have trouble breathing when I lie down.

I know, I know, I know I should go see a doctor, but I just hate going to doctors and clinics. I just bear the waiting, and having my health checked. I'm in fact shaken just thinking about it. I've seen too many doctors, waited too long at hospitals, been too often to appointments and heard so much disappointing and heart breaking news I just avoid it all like the plague...

So I've been staying home most of the time, and I have very little desire to see or talk to people. Its turning out to be a very solitary start to my 30s. I've been watching a lot of series online, my suitcase is still unpacked, a big project I need to work on still un-started.  I just feel so weak, and so tired, and the coughing and chest pains make me tired even more.

The cold is really unbearable, and it's already early March. I thought being away for a while I'd escape the full brunt of winter, but it seems this winter is here to stay. At least the days are getting longer, so there is more light and it's less depressing.

So theres not much to report really. Very solitary life, keeping a low profile, keeping to myself and staying out of harm's way...

Deterioration

The continuing cold has really affected my health and recovery. Just before I left home last week, I seemed to be doing better. But somehow, I feel so much weaker than before, especially after the good rest and food I during my retreat in the mountains.

But I guess the traveling, which lasted over 72hrs, as I was transiting in three different cities and staying overnight in two of them, really put a strain on my body.

I woke up today with such a sore chest and terrible coughing. I lay in bed more and fell asleep again until a friend called and dropped by to give me a belated birthday package. It was a surprise, from my ex, and my first reaction was "He really shouldn't have...". There's a reason why o stayed away from home on my birthday, why I deliberately planned my trip so I wouldn't be home: I just didn't want people to go through all the trouble of throwing some party or feeling obliged to get me gifts and spending money on me, because frankly I really have all that I ever need. I opened the box, and it was the CD to the musical Once (twice...) Which he and I went to watch together. A musical about finding love in the most unlikely of circumstances and pursuing one's dreams. Is it just me whose minds reads too much into things...? And there was a special Star Trek edition of the game of Catan I so love playing. Last year I got a board game too. But to this day, I've not found the people or opportunity to play it, and I wonder when I will ever be able to use my gift... Soon, I hope. I do miss having people I can trust and whose company I enjoy, as I have been alone far too long.

I dragged myself out the house and off to work. -20C, with wind chill. I had difficulty breathing, and was panting by the time I got up the hill that nornallly didn't seem such a challenge, but today felt like it was robbing me of my life. The rest of the day, I struggled to breathe and felt chest pains.

When I decided to call it a day, I stopped by a colleague and she said I looked so horrible. She advised me to stay home. "You really should rest more and stop going in the cold...." She said it oit of real concern, and it somewhat echoed my wish to rest more, because I felt so exhausted, so physically heavy and lethargic, even from not doing much.

I kind of  feel bad, as Ive been away from the office for three weeks, and would feel guilty if I stayed away more. But I really cannot push myself and should not exert myself more than necessary, because I'm on my own here and nobody will come take care of me(like my aunt did...) if I were to fall terribly ill again.

And somehow, from the dizziness and chest pains,  I do feel like I'm heading toward  the way I felt two weeks ago when the  illness began to wreck havoc on my body...

Struggle

A few days since my return, and I'm still struggling to cope with the jetlag and tiredness, which this time is accentuated by the lingering effects of my weakened body and continued coughing.

I feel like sleeping, and feel such heaviness again brought on by the return to this arctic climate, and dreams and images I have when I close my eyes.

Seat 30F
On board flight UA 849 from SJC-DEN, plane about to depart. I slept perhaps two and a  half hours yesterday, due to a sudden change in plans and a last minute search on my newly acquired pad (brother helped choose it for me, bless him...) for a place to stay tonight.
I was out the door around 5.30, and originally intended to walk to the airport, a distance  of a mile and a half, but with two big suitcase and two carry ons and a weakened and aching chest, and a heavy winter coat, would infitely feel much further. Luckily, and the first stroke of good luck since turning thirty (at least according to local time... I technically turned thirty yesterday, tpe time... But the changes in time zones and flying has confused me), there was a taxi parked right next to the gas station next to my motel. The man just happened to be there and taking a toilet break. He saved me the long walk and tiredness of having to haul my suitcase all the way to the airport.
This is the flight I originally scheduled back in January, a part of the crazy itinerary from YUL-(exam).YYZ-DEN-LAX-(Hand in hand)-TPE---(Happy Music Time) NRT-(788)-SJC-DEN-YUL. The routing is so ridiculous (and source of raised eye brows, even from a checkin staff!) because of the Hello Kitty and B788 jets I wanted to take, and due to the availability of the sectors redeeming US Airways miles. Earlier this month, I actually bought a flight directly to Montreal for today, hoping to be at home with my cat on my birthday. But last night, just before bed, I cancelled that flight. On a whim, just like that.
Yes, I am extremely wishy washy and often things dont always go according to original plans (which is a source of frustration and joke to some...). But honestly, how can life not change? How can plans always be realised when everything, all factors, all moods and moments are changing all the time? Get stuck to plans and be unbudging or unyielding, and you suffer more. Change and adapt, be free like the blowing of the wind, and you are set free and freeer.
Another reason why I did not fly home directly today is because I don't wish to face any one today, especially today, and it's easier to be not home than to have to explain to people where I am or when I'm coming home and why I don't wish to see anyone on my birthday. It's tiring. Especially having to put on a happy face and be there completely caught offguard by surprises or anything that will make upset and feel embarrassed (even if they were wellmeaning). In particular, I am avoiding one person, as I just don't know how to face him any more and we have become so estranged, mainly because I have really reduced communication with him to spare myself any more hurt and unsolicited hopes and desires (something I should have done two, three years ago, just as everyone told me too). Besides, why worry or bother someone who made clear we are nothing more than "friends" now?  As far as most people know, i'm still in Taiwan. And I've not acccessed my phone or Facebook for the past few days. Out of sight, out of mind as they say.
I wish to keep a low profile, and to be incognito and not enter my third decade on a completely uncharted and unplanned note by going somewhere new and unfamiliar and by distancing myself from the people and places of the past.
Here's to a new year, a new decade  (of my life), to real peace and joy, true love and many, many new wonderful adventures and beautiful encounters.

18 February 2014

Prayers...

I cannot explain why... Standing in front of mum's and dad's memorials, my eyes moistened. And I could not stop crying...

I turned away so that I am not seen.

I could not stop crying.

I could not stop the heartwrenching, throatchoking, trembling emotions trigerred by this deep, deep sense of pain and loss. I could not bear the void I felt inside...

My brother held his son and approached mum's memorial. My nephew giggled and  called out "A-ma", Taiwanese cor grandmother, almost as soon as he saw mum's picture. He said "miao-mi", meaning cat, because on one picture, there's a cat resting on my mum's shoulder, a picture taken in southern France in a remote village. Everyone laughed, I smiled.

But despite the smile, I felt so empty inside. I am again here on my own, not in the sense that I am alone, but in the sense I really have no one I can share my deepest feelings and desires with. Coming to see mum and dad on my thirtieth birthday underlined that sense of isolation and loneliness, that sense of abandonment and longing for a family of my own.

I wiped my tears, but they kept on coming. Uncontrollable, powerful and so laden with longing and memories. The emotions were so unexpected, so wild, just like the pouring rain and winds outside and the crashing and violent waves on the Pacific on this day...

I miss you so much, mum, dad....

(Lunar) birthday

It's a good day to offer prayers and food to and to worship the ancestors. For two days I've been running around and buying lots of foods and fruits and drinks, neglecting my ill health and body aches in the process. Somehow, the chest pains seem to feel much worse than before, so much so I have trouble taking deep breaths. The doctor said I should really rest and take it easy... But how can I? So much to do!

Today's the Twentieh day of of the first lunar month. A good day to worship the deceased. It's also my (lunar) birthday.

And what better day to go visit my parents than today?

Sleepless in Taipei

Midnight. I left the hotel that I was sharing with my brother and his family. I could not sleep, and from the experience last night, its unlikely I'd get any sleep.

Brother's snoring is really bad. It's so loud and so irritating, like a machine that needs oiling, badly. I know he snores. I've experienced it  first hand on family holidays (something he probably inherited from mum...), and also those days he was ay home and staying in the living room. But I'm also somewhat concerned by it, for it seems to cause him discomfort, at least from what I can hear. It seems to get worse with age. So bad even ear buds (yes, I went to stay with them prepared....) did not help block out the noise. I told him he should go someone about the problem. I asked his wife if it bothered her, but she says she's used to it and doesn't mind much.

So at midnight I decided to venture out into the streets of Taipei. I hailed a taxi and made my way to my cousin's. Lucky she was still awake and could offer me refuge for the night-- a night I need a good sleep to prepare for the big day tomorrow.

Home?

How symbolic...
Originally my brother and his family wanted to take professional pictures in Taipei, next to mum's old house, our old home, but because of the rainy weather the photo shoot had to be cancelled and postponed.

It will now be done on my birthday, in Taichung, the city where my sisterinlaw is from, where my first port of call was three weeks ago.

Taipei doesn't seem to be our/my home anymore..

Raid

160214.1524
I felt so embarrassed. I called my brother's mother-in-law and said I'm going to visit her. I did want to before I left the country to thank her for hospitality, but in fact I had a "mission" to fulfill and needed to go to her place to "raid" her house in search for items belonging to my late mother.
I probably made too much of a big deal out of this, especially as she did tell me to take whatever I see at her place. that belonged to mum. And there are plenty of things, from duvets to pillows, from cups to a massage machine, from the formosan hinoki wood barrel (for foot-soaking) to wooden furniture and decorations that used to hang on mum's walls to fridge magnets that I bought for her (of Canada. Quebec, of the cirque du Soleil shows we went to see together...). So many things that belonged to mum and that were in mum's house before, are now at my brother's mother-in-law's place.
All because when it was time to pack everything away last year, I was not there. So out of convenience, they shipped evrything to  one address. Much to the surprise, or perhaps even disdain, of mum's siblings, especially her youngest sister. So two weeks ago she asked me yo go and see what else there is left, especially of mum's wardrobe.
There aren't much clothes left. There were three bags of clothes that were collected, but becaese my auntie did not go pick them up (and my brother did not bother to ship them to her...), most of the clothes have been donated to charity. There are some that my sisterinlaw kept for herself. The best things, the branded and expensive things.
What can I say? In my mind, if my sisterinlaw could use the clothes, especially the winter ones in Europe, why not? Am I to ask for them back so I can give them to my auntie? How embarrassing that would be, to ask for clothes that someone has been wearing for over a year and half.
So I went in the house of my brother's mother-in-law today, and I left with a porcelain cup and a pillow that turns into a down blanket for myself. The rest of the things, though there are many memories attached to them, I just cannot bear to go through and "raid"... How do you take away from someone tea cups and plates (even if they are Wedgwood...), cutlery and items of fufnitture that have de facto been owned by someone for almost two years?
I went in embarrassed and came out embarrased. In the end, I identified two lovely duvets and pillows and asked for them to be shipped to my cousin (my auntie's daughter), thinking she could use them most. I'm not sure what my brother will say if he hears of this, or what his mother-in-law thinks of me.
I'm just trying to give my auntie something to remember her sister with. It's not a pleasant task to go into someone's house and take things... And it's not just because it's hard to go through mum's belongings again and having to relive the memories and to hurt again.
I tried to do the best I can.

Restlessness

150214.2233
My mind... It's so restless. Drifting to people and places far, far beyond the walls of this meditation hall... Drifting to moments in the past and imaginations in the future, being anywhere but here and in the now.

I  cannot control this mind, this mind beset by guilt, attachments and longings... This mind that is so wild and free, yet in actual fact so constrained by conditioning and by habit.

I look inward, and I see darkness, I see nothing. I see fear, liking and disliking, I hear dialogue with myself and I see a frightened being wanting to break free from the past and people of the past. I see a meditator trying to overcome physical pain, trying to see through mental creations trying to find that moment of peace and calm.

I am trying.
I am beginning to understand again.

In the end, we are no one. In the end, we are nothing. In the end, all this claim to fame, all this wealth, all these desires we feed and all these hatreds we harbour mean nothing.

Do you want to live life, live the rest of your years, blind and deaf and constantly struggling against yourself and the world, like the vast majority of people?

Or do you want to break free?

Mama...

It was a crowded room full of people (felt like it was my brother's mother-in-law's place...). The tv was blaring, there were a lot of people (who I could not see...) And the noise of chatter. I could not make out what was being said. The tv screen flashed with the news and the opening credits of some tv show.

I curled up in the corner and closed my eyes. I opened my eyes and saw the tv flash, heard the noise of constant chatter and felt the presence (though could still not see) of a lot of people...

Then I felt a sudden wrenching emotion. I felt a particular presence (or in this case, abnsence...) of one person. I felt the absence of my mother. I felt again, amidst all this noise and in the midst of all these faceless (and "invisible") people, that painful, painful void!

That painful void!

That besrtwrenching void!

I started to sob uncontrollably.

"Mama.... Mama....!" I seemed to cry out curled up in the corner. " Mama...!"

I woke up, and with the wretched pain torturing my body, my chest/lung area, I had tears in my eyes.

Pain...

The chest pains are so bad I can hardly sleep. Every move I make , I ache. And coughing makes it all the worse...

What's wrong, body?
What's wrong? Why do I ache so badly....?

And the dogs keep on barking...
Do they sense something is happening with the earth? Two days ago, there was very unusual seismic activity north of Taipei, the capital. 4.4 Richter, not a big quake, but the location was very peculiar, somewhere where theres not been seismic activity for thousands years.

Experts have been predicting a  big one, a very very destructive one. Far more destructive than the one in 1999 which killed over two thoudand, the epicentre of which was merely a dozen kilometers or so from where I am right now. Could there be signs?

Restless night.

Valentine's Day

140214.1044

"Where are you, my Valentine?
Somewhere out there waiting for me,
Just as I am waiting for you.
Can I see you, my Valentine?
Can I touch your face, feel your heart beat and kiss you
The way you touch me, feel me and kiss me?

In sorrow and in joy, in moments of loss and in moments of gain, in pain and in elation,
You are on my mind."

I've been in the mountains for three days now. The air is cleaner and clearer, and I have been told the environment will help me heal and recuperate. I've been sleeping a lot, and if not sleeping, meditating or chatting with the monk. The fever has gone, the dizziness and head aches have subsided, but the coughing remains, and there seems to be no sign of easing. And for two days now, I feel this sharp pain in my lungs when I cough, a pain that is accompanied by a shooting pain  in my lower abdomen. When I cough, the phlegm that comes out, though clear, somehow tastes bloody. And it's not just when I cough, but also when I breathe deeply, or when I want to speak louder or project my voice. I fear something may be wrong with my lungs, and I've been urged to go to the hospital or at least see a doctor to have a check up. It may be pneumonia, or some kind of damage to my lung from the prolonged coughing and fever before that's causing the very sharp abd constant pain on either side of my chest /lung area.

This influenza has really wrecked my body, and I am experiencing side effects and after effects now, almost three weeks after the initial symptoms. But you know me and hospitals... I avoid them like a plague. I am traumatised bt hospitals and doctors after prolonged exposure to them those months of being in such close contact with them as my mum's health deteriorated and eventuallly passed. My fear is such I'd rather suffer pain (sometimes so unbearable...) Than step into another hospital. It's not good, I know. And it's perhaps a reason why I'm in such terrible shape now because I didn't seek medical attention until four days after I started having severe fever, even though it was clear not ordinary pills were helping...

This morning I went downstairs to a special surprise. The monk and two friends had plotted a small early birthday gathering for me. They brought a beautifully decorated chocolate mousse cake and twenty pink roses, and laid out several gifts on the table to surprise  me. I was and felt so embarrassed.

I never like being the centre of attention and receiving things (though I do love to give surprises and give...), so much so I expressly tell people not to do anything on my birthday and not to get me anything. And for several years now, I turned off the birthday function on Facebook so people are nor reminded. But besides fresh flowers and nicely wrapped gifts (mainly precious Buddhist artefacts and scrolls for me to decorate my little shrine at home, the one inherited from my mother...), there were cut out hearts to coincide with Valentine's Day. I was moved, genuinely touched, and its not even my birthday yet.

The little cake and coffee/tea party was just right... Three people I close to and appreciate, especially the monk who for the past seven (almost eight!) years has been like a father figure, who has offered me much spiritual and personal guidance and counselling. We ate and drank and delighted in one another's plesantness and company, which made me forget about my illness and body pains.

They lit a candle and said I needed to make a wish.

And so I made one.

May it come true.

Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu...

After the illlness

Over ten days since my fever began. The fever has more or less gone (though I'm having "heat flashes" and occasional outbreaks of sweat...), but the side effects linger. Is it from the meds or from the H1N1? I don't know...

All I know is I'm so tired, so very tired, and my body still aches and pains. And the coughing is almost incessant, like there is an endless irritation in my throat that I cannot get rid of. The more I cough, the weaker I get. Sometimes the coughing is so bad I feel my stomach churning and feel like I'm going to throw up. All the while, my head seems to be spinning and I can hardly focus without my my drifting away and being left in a daze...

I'm in no condition to go anywhere or deal anything. Yet, there are still effects belonging to my late mother I need to sort  through, things I could not deal with because last new year I could not return. My brother and his wife, in a hurry to clear everything out and quickly rent the place out for rent, more or less shipped everything to their mum(-in-law)'s place, which means I need to open boxes and sort things and decide what to do with them. It's like unearthing a grave after the body's long gone and buried.

Not something Im looking forward to, especially not in the condition I am in. I need more rest, more sleep, more healthy food to replenish my battered and exhausted body and spirit.

Mum's plants

Still alive after all this time...

09 February 2014

Dizziness

So dizzy...
So weak...
So tired.

Day nine

Almost day nine since I fell ill, and day six after I started receiving treatment. My head is hurting so badly, and I have difficulty concentrating. When I look at something, like the floor, it seems to shift and move. Dizzying...

Is it the lingering effects of the severe strain of the influenza virus or lingering effects of the medicine that is supposed to kill the influenza virus? I don't know. I know only my body is aching and in great discomfort in ways I have rarely felt before. And yesterday, after the follow-up, the doctor prescribed with with dozens of medicine I have to take to fully eradicate the virus. I am tempted not to take them, as I have this innate resistance against taking pills (I've seen my parents take more than enough pills in their lives........). I am tempted to not take the pills also because I feel I am destroying my body and insides but gulping down all these chemicals and man-made toxins. But what is the alternative? Allow my body to weaken from an illness or from the pills? I just want to get rid of this terrible throbbing headache and physical discomfort that I cannot fully describe let alone pin-point the origin of.

Where did the days go? The past ten days in Taiwan have been a haze, composed of sleep, lots of coughing and a stint at the emergency room. Family and relatives have been around me and are concerned about my wellbeing, and especially my auntie (mum's youngest sister) has shown me great hospitality and kindness...

But this is exactly the kind of moment I miss my parents the most. This is the kind of moment when I wish there were this special someone to care for me and to tell me I will be alright...

03 February 2014

Illness and healing....

How did I become so ill? So ill it feels like I'm about to faint and never wake up again...? Never in my life have I felt this way. The fever that comes and goes, the incessant sweating and painful cough that can be easily triggered by swallowing saliva. The worst is the dizziness and delirium... When I close my eyes, I see the universe and white flashes of light and spots. When I open my eyes, the world spins and I must tread ever so careful so as not to fall and collapse...

It all began the day after I arrived. I know I'd been coughing for over a month, but symptoms of a cold have already subsided from consumptions of echinacea and herbal teas and lots of fresh fruit smoothies. I boarded the plane, arrived in Taiwan and felt alright. The first day i slept for close to eight hours but I woke up and felt pain throughout my body. Aches and sores, sweating and a light fever. These have lasted for three days now, and I cannot tell if I am getting better or worse.

Two friends and my cousin arranged to surprise me at the high speed railway station three days ago. I was already feeling ill, but they were so kind and sp thoughtful to travel all this way to coke see me and be with me, because they know I'll be very lonely (and hurting at times...) During this holiday when families get together. I was extremely touched, and shocked beyond words when I saw the two of them, one of whom I've not seen for over eight years, but whom I got in touch again because the other friend thougut she and I would have a lot to relate with one another. indeed, she struggled with the loss of her parents, struggled/-s to move on and find self worth and love in others. She experienced the depression, lethargy, the unwillingness to get up and face the world, the inability to find joy and lightness in life after her parents passed. A few years on, she is still alive, still standing and has managed to reconcile with loss, but it takes times, patience and will...

One thing is for sure, I cannot deal with the loss of people who have died, but I can chose to deal with pepole whose presence in my life has become obsolete or become a hindrance to finding self worth and love. I do need to surround myself with people who are supportive and understanding, who would literally travel the world to be with me and show me the depth of their love and care, who can look me in the eues and tell me I can tell them anything, everything and not judge, not grovel and not hit back and say I complain all the time and am not grateful. I am grateful, beyond words, but the gratitude and feelings of kindness and care and love for the other has been so depleted by the energy and time I have dedicated and focused on my mother and (to some extend) father. I am not just an empty shell, hollow of feelings, dazed and destroyed inside after five, six years of trying to cope with loss and trying to find healing and solace rom the tears that she'd so easily. I am trying, really tryjng.
My head is spinning still, and my friends and I are heading to the north today. I have no real plans, except to stay with them while they are still here. In ways I feel terrible they are here with me but my body is wracked by illness and sores, my voice is coarse and I can hardly speak or eat or drink... But they said we don't have to do anything, all they want to do is be with me...

I am going to see how things go, I may check myself into the emergency room somewhere. But I hate that, I hate hospitals and sirens. I  just dread getting into the medical system. But in the back of my head I am concerned that this is not just some common cold that will subside. This may be a strain of a cold virus that has claimed lives in this region and also in north America.

I don't know what to do. My brothr and sisterinlaw are heading overseas today, my relatives are in the south. If I head to the north i have no one to take care of me or see me if I'm ill or hospitalised...

This is turning out to be some start to the new year.

28 January 2014

Yul-yyz

Flight 495, yul-yyz.

First flight of four to come in the next forty-eight hours. I started crying almost as soon as I sat down. The tears have been collecting, and threatening to escape my tired, tired eyes. It's been like this for the past two, three weeks. Another emotional spell whereby I can be so easily pushed over the edge and cry...

Exam anxiety, anniversary of dad's passing, the dread of going home and uncertainty of where I will stay. A friend said I'll survive, because I surived last year. But in all honesty, I don't want to just survive. I want to live. I want to love. I want to feel alive and smile again! How long must I go on surviving? How long must I bear these heavy, heavy burdens and emotions  of grief and loss and longing? Impatient, I am. Because it's been so long, and yet I cannot shake out of it. I cannot let go. I cannot escape the bursting of tears and emotions when my mind drifts back, without me even wanting or trying, to events in yesteryears....

The knowledge of having a home to return to and a mother to go back to to hug whenever I fly back... The feeling of family and belonging just there, even if so far away... The reunion dinners and fancy feasts that we used to enjoy this time of the year... The comfort and knowledge of having a dear friend and lover whom I can trust and speak to, whom I enjoyed and look forward to speaking to and seeing...

Everything rolled into one jumble of emotional entanglement and web of attachments and longing I cannot free myself from.

 Everything is gone!

Everything is in the past!

Nothing stays ever the same!

Much of my emotional outbursts I realise are related to this exam. Why, again, I hear my mind ask myself, am I torturing myself with exams I could not care more or less about? Why do I put myself through periodical bouts of severe agony and depression every three months over a piece of paper, the recognition of having a title for which I seriously have no intention of using?

I want to give up, I want to stop it all, but I dont know how. All I can think of are the judgmental voices and faces.... All I can see are the wags of fingers of shame.

I am pushing myself to the edge, and for what? For what? I am sleeping four hours a day because I can't sleep more than that at night (and yet have such frequent needs of lying down and curling up in a foetal position and closing my eyes to hide...). Why am I putting my mind and body through this?

I am so tired.... And these tears make me so drowsy, so droswsy and weak.

Longings

I wish just for once, I could wake up to a special someone and kiss him and be kissed back...

I wish I could feel warm breath on my cheeks, on the back of my neck, feel stroking through my hair, the way I would do to the other person...

I wish I didn't need to meet someone and then leave, uncertain whether I'll see the other person again, whether I'll able to kiss his lips, watch him sleep, feel the warmth and every nook and cranny of his body as we lie next to one another.

Will this ever happen, I wonder.

I live for and dream of that day, of that special someone.

25 January 2014

End of the day

At the end of the day,
You are alone,
And must face the quiet and the solitude alone.

At the end of the day,
You cannot rely on the unending compassion and support of others,
And must realise that real peace can only be made within.

At the end of the day,
When you think back at the onslaught of tears and emotions that were ejected,
You may cry again,
Or you may toughen up and bite the inside of your lips and say to yourself,
The day is almost over.

Soon it will all be over.

Airport goodbye

As I stood in the airport terminal and explained to the auntie the whole checkin process, I suddenly felt this pang of sadness rise and take over me. This seems so familiar. These feelings feel so familiar, are feelings I've not felt in such a long time...

Caring for someone. Explaining to someone patiently how to do something so they do not get confused and are not afraid to go off on their own. I did that so many times before with my dad, with my mum. Just like the moment i had this afternoon. That care and love and hope that someone you care about will be safe on their own as they travel.

My friend's mum was leaving to visit her in Vancouver, and my friend asked me to take her mum to the airport, which I gladly accepted. This auntie is always so kind to me, and treats me as if I were part of her family. Six months back, i took her on the very same journey and she just trailed behind me and said she felt really secure and didn't have to worry much. Today, she's going on her own. I felt responsible, and wanted to explain to her as best as I could so she is not afraid or anxious. In this auntie, I saw reflections of my own mother... Living overseas, but lacking the necesarry language skills to be fully independent. A foreigner in a foreign country, unable to fully understand what is going on, and unable to fully take part in society. Going out can be a challenge, and there is forever that fear of being in a difficult situation and being unable to explain or express yourself, when all you can do is nervously smile...

I pointed out the guest lounges, the boarding gate, and briefed her again on going through security. I told her not to worry, that there is nothing to worry about for all she had to do was get onboard the plane and as soon as she lands, there will be no customs. It's pretty straight forward, I said and reassured her that she would be alright.

i looked her in the eyes, and she looked a bit anxious. I told the auntie to be careful and to have a plesant trip and reunion with her daughter ( my friend). Then I gave her a big hug. A hug that lasted for a while as I patted her back. I felt myself inadvertently tear and struggle so hard to contain my emotions.

I watched as the auntie walked in line and queued for security. I started waving at her, smiling, or at least pretending to. Inside, i was overcome with emotions. How many times have I lived  and experienced this moment with my parents? How many times have I said goodbye to them at airports around the world? How many times have I had to be brave and be strong so that my parents cannot see me cry and feel sad themselves?

I know, it's not my mother, but in this auntie I felt the closest resemblance to the dear mother I have lost. And in saying goodbye, in watching her disappear in the crowd of passengers, I was reminded of that heart wrenching loss I feel. It was so bitter, and yet so sweet to feel. Who would have known an act of kindness and gesture to help a friend would turn around to make me feel this pain and this sense of longing and loss inside?

What I would do to have the opportunity for another word with mum, for the chance to hug her and show and tell her how much I care about her.... What I would give to have the opportunity to say a final goodbye and send her peacefully on her way with the knowledge that she will be safe again. Those moments at the airport made me think of the characters in the fictional town of "The call from heaven", where several people began receiving calls from their loved ones abd from the deceased.

I stood around for close to twenty minutes and followed with my eyes this auntie every step of the way. I noticed she got held up. I saw her carryon being flipped open and a security officer go through everything inside. She gestured to me. She looked nervous. And next I knew, the security officer walked toward me and crossed the secure area and beckoned me to get closer. He smiled at me and handed me a folded Swiss knife with a bottle opener all in one. "Can't take that onboard, I'm afraid!" I took the "deadly" device and pocketed it.

I looked up, and the auntie smiled at me.

I waved and gestured a thumbs up to her, trying to let her know I have it and will keep it safe. I watched as she put on her boots her, her jacket and packed her carryon again. She stood out from the crowd. Not only because she likes to dress colourfully, but because she was a reminder of my mother. She is a mother, on her way to visit her child and have a reunion. In her purse is a card I wrote to my friend. On the card, I wished my friend a wonderful reunion and hoped that she would cherish the moments together with her mum (even if its just wandering around the aisles of the local supermarket...). Because moments with your mother are precious. Because moments with a loved one are limited, and once gone are lost forever.

Nightmares

Studying has been such a struggle, a painful struggle. Why? Because I'm not interested, at all... Because I'm not into the law!

Why am I even doing this, for what reason? For what purpose? For whom?
Is this why I try to do everything but study for  an exam that I don't even want to do?

I just feel like napping, sleeping, napping and sleeping... And that's what I do.

And i dream...

I see my family, I see my mum, whom I miss so much. I see my brother, my home in Europe, my cat who passed away in October. I see all that I miss, all that I treasured in life....

I see them all, and I long to be there with them. There in this image of reality which only appears when i sleep. is this why i sleep so much?  Is this why So  i can escape and hope to join them in the world of dreams?

14 January 2014

Nap dream...

I saw both my parents again.

It was so real, FELT so real! The emotions, the scene, the way were spoke and behaved.
The tears...

We were having some sort of family reunion, all about to sit at the dinner table.
Dad was in his room, napping. Mum and I in the kitchen making the final touches to dinner. Brother was around somewhere, I think using his computer.

I felt it, I felt I was there.

It was too real... It felt so real.

I woke up drained and in tears again...
